Greensboro Airport, also known as Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA), is a public airport located in Guilford County, North Carolina, USA. The airport serves the Piedmont Triad region, which includes Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point.
The airport was originally built in 1927 as a private airport for the Cone family, who owned a textile mill in the area. In 1943, the airport was purchased by the federal government and used as a training base for pilots during World War II. After the war, the airport was returned to civilian use and has since undergone several expansions and renovations to accommodate the growing number of passengers.
Today, Greensboro Airport covers an area of 2,800 acres and has two runways. It serves as a hub for FedEx Express and is also used by several major airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. In 2019, the airport served over 1.2 million passengers.
Greensboro Airport has three runways and one terminal building. Completed in 1982, the terminal building of Piedmont Triad International Airport currently has 26 passenger gates: 14 on the north concourse, and 12 on the south concourse.The airport offers a range of facilities for passengers, including several dining and shopping options, free Wi-Fi, and a business center. There are also several lounges available for passengers, including the American Airlines Admirals Club and the United Club.
The airport is located approximately 9 miles west of Greensboro and serves the metropolitan area of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point.
In terms of public transport options, the airport is served by several taxi and shuttle services, as well as several car rental companies. There is also a bus service operated by PART (Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation) that connects the airport to downtown Greensboro and other nearby cities. Additionally, the airport has a parking garage and several surface parking lots available for passengers who wish to drive to the airport.
