Sriwijaya Air Reopens Popular Jakarta-Pekanbaru Route

Budget airline Sriwijaya Air will resume return flights between Jakarta and Pekanbaru, the capital of Sumatra's Riau province, from Friday after securing delivery of a Boeing 737-800NG jet, a company executive said over the weekend.


Sriwijaya closed the route in 2013 amid rising costs stoked by a higher fuel price and weakening rupiah.


Agus Soedjono, Sriwijaya's senior manager for corporate communications, said on Sunday that the airline would service the route daily with its new 188-seat jet, which is supposed to be more fuel-efficient than earlier generations of aircraft.


"œJakarta-Pekanbaru is a busy route for passengers and cargo," Agus said. "œIn addition, the Idul Fitri holiday will also increase demand on this route."
